Road safety experts are warning drivers of the consequences they face if they skip their MOT or car maintenance checks. The Government launched a consultation in January on the future of MOT tests, looking at the feasibility of delaying new car safety checks. It was suggested to save drivers money during the current economic crisis and to free up MOT garage space.
There are, however, concerns from many across the motoring sector that these measures could result in people driving dangerously. Motorists with mechanical problems would also suffer as a result. Any existing problems may worsen if they wait too long to get their vehicle checked, resulting in more expensive repairs.
According to Halfords research, many motorists are considering driving without an MOT this year. Almost four in 10 drivers admitted they were worried about being able to afford their next MOT test.
